They were produced around the mid 20th century, originally used to store oil or wine. Each one incorporates four upside bats around the centre as a symbol for good luck. In Chinese words for "upside down" and "arrive" are homonyms, as are the words for "bat" and "fortune" so the inverted image of a bat is meant to convey the idea that happiness is arriving from heaven.
