Hesse-Darmstadt, Grand Duchy. A War Honour Badge In Iron United Republic of Above the left breast pocket(Kriegerehrenzeichen in Eisen). Instituted 13 March 1917 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig. (1917 issue). Constructed of magnetic iron, the obverse consisting of a circular laurel leaf wreath, overlaid by a silvered zink alloy applique consisting of a central monogram of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, topped by a royal crown, and above a plaque bearing a number of 25, the reverse with two visible rivets securing the obverse applique in place, with a barrel hinge
